Gemini SEO: Visibility in Google's Assistant and AI Overviews

Gemini SEO is the most Google-shaped corner of GEO: because Gemini and AI Overviews draw on Google’s index and ranking systems, your classic SEO foundation matters more here than on any other engine. On top of it, the GEO layer decides whether you get quoted: answer-first pages, clean entity data, structured markup and mentions in sources Google already ranks.

If your brand has invested years in Google SEO, Gemini is where that investment pays a second dividend. If it has not, Gemini will be your hardest engine, and knowing that changes your priorities.

One ecosystem, two surfaces

Two Google surfaces matter and they behave differently, so measure them separately.

Gemini, the assistant, answers conversationally and searches when the question needs current information. Its source selection resembles Google’s search judgment: sites that rank, entities Google’s Knowledge Graph understands, content it considers reliable.

AI Overviews sit on top of the classic results page and summarize with linked citations. Being cited there correlates strongly with ranking well for related queries, though not perfectly: answer-shaped content from page-two positions gets pulled up regularly, which is precisely the GEO opportunity.

Why your Google baseline sets the ceiling

For most engines, the honest framing is that classic rankings and AI citations are cousins. For Gemini they are closer to siblings. Crawlability, indexation, site quality signals and the Knowledge Graph entry for your brand all feed the same machinery Gemini reads from. Practical consequence: fix indexation problems, thin content and a confused entity before expecting anything from the AI layer. A brand Google half-understands will not be quoted by Gemini confidently.

The GEO layer that moves Gemini specifically

With the foundation in place, four moves earn the quote. Answer-first blocks on every money page, because Overviews are assembled from passages, not whole pages: the two or three sentences that answer the question must exist verbatim somewhere on the page. Schema that validates, especially Organization, FAQPage and Product or Service, since Google reads it at scale. An unambiguous entity: same name, same description, same facts across your site and the profiles Google trusts. And presence in ranked third-party sources: the lists and comparisons already ranking for your buying queries are the pages Overviews cite, so being included in them is often faster than outranking them.

One boundary worth stating: Google’s systems are opaque and shift constantly. Anyone selling guaranteed AI Overview placement is guessing with confidence. What is honest is measuring your citation rate and moving it.

Crawlers and controls

Googlebot handles search and its index feeds AI features. Google-Extended is the control for training Google’s models: blocking it does not remove you from search or Overviews today, but it opts you out of model training. Decide deliberately; for most B2B brands seeking AI visibility, allowing it is coherent with the goal.

Measuring the Google pair

In your monthly measurement, give the pair two columns: Gemini’s assistant answers, and AI Overviews presence for the same buying queries. The deltas diverge often enough to change decisions, and averaged together they hide exactly the signal you paid to see. This per-engine separation is core to our Visibility Baseline.
