How to Rank in Perplexity
To rank in Perplexity, publish pages that answer one question directly, keep them fresh, and build presence on the sources Perplexity already trusts, like Reddit and LinkedIn. Perplexity cites sources in every answer, its citation patterns are more stable than ChatGPT’s, and competition for Perplexity optimization terms is still low.
Perplexity is the most citation-native of the major AI engines. Where ChatGPT decides per query whether to search the web, Perplexity retrieves and cites sources for essentially every answer. That makes it the clearest scoreboard in AI search: either your domain shows up in the citations or it does not. This guide covers how it selects sources, what the data shows, and what to do about it.
How does Perplexity choose what to cite?
Perplexity is retrieval-first. It runs its own crawler, PerplexityBot, maintains its own index, and pulls live results at query time, then an LLM composes the answer from the retrieved pages. Practical consequences:
- If PerplexityBot cannot crawl you, you cannot be cited. Check your robots.txt and any bot-blocking CDN rules before anything else.
- Retrieval rewards extractable answers. Pages that state the answer in the first lines, under a heading that matches the question, get lifted more often than pages that bury it. The same answer-first structure that works for ranking in ChatGPT works here.
- Freshness carries real weight. Perplexity leans toward recently updated pages for time-sensitive queries, so a maintained page with a visible updated date beats a stale one.
Which sources does Perplexity cite most?
Semrush analyzed over 230,000 prompts across ChatGPT search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity over 13 weeks, tracking more than 100 million citations. In that study, Perplexity’s most-cited domains were Reddit, LinkedIn, NIH, Microsoft and Google.
Two findings matter for strategy. First, Perplexity was the most stable of the three platforms: while ChatGPT’s Reddit citations swung from roughly 60% of responses to about 10% between August and September, Perplexity’s major sources stayed relatively consistent. Stable citation patterns mean the work you do compounds instead of resetting every model update. Second, Wikipedia appeared in only about 0.8% of Perplexity’s responses, far below its weight elsewhere. You do not need an encyclopedia entry to win here; you need presence on community and professional platforms, plus a crawlable site of your own.
For B2B brands, the LinkedIn finding is the actionable one: company pages, founder profiles and posts are citable surfaces on a domain Perplexity already pulls from heavily. Reddit works the same way, with the usual caveat that promotional posting backfires.
Why is Perplexity the underpriced surface right now?
Here is our own data. We pulled these keywords on September 29, 2026 from Semrush (Keyword Overview, US database):
| Keyword | Monthly searches | Keyword difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| chatgpt seo | 1,600 | 41 |
| ai search optimization | 3,600 | 51 |
| perplexity seo | 170 | 25 |
| perplexity ai optimization | 90 | 21 |
| how to rank in perplexity | 70 | 23 |
Everyone is fighting over ChatGPT visibility. Demand for Perplexity optimization is a fraction of that, but all three Perplexity terms sit at or near their 12-month search peak in the most recent months of trend data, while difficulty stays in the low 20s. Interest is accelerating and the competitive moat has not formed yet. Our read: the brands that build Perplexity citations now will hold them, precisely because of the citation stability the Semrush study documents. The same logic applies to your customers’ queries inside Perplexity, where most B2B categories still have no entrenched incumbent in the citations.
What should you do on your own site?
- Verify crawl access for PerplexityBot in robots.txt and at the CDN level.
- Restructure key pages answer-first: the question as the heading, a 40 to 60 word direct answer immediately below, detail after.
- Add visible update dates and keep money pages current. Freshness is a retrieval signal here more than in classic SEO.
- Publish original data. Perplexity’s citations favor pages that are the source of a number, not the tenth summary of it. A small dated study beats a long generic guide.
- Build the off-site layer: an active LinkedIn company page, founder profile, and genuinely useful Reddit participation in your category’s subreddits.
- Mark up entities with schema so retrieval connects your brand name, domain and offer. Our AI search optimization service page shows the full stack we implement, and our GEO tools comparison covers what to measure with.
How do you measure whether Perplexity cites you?
Run your buyers’ real questions in Perplexity and log which domains appear in the citations, on a fixed list of prompts, at a fixed cadence. Track three numbers: how often you are cited, how often each competitor is cited, and which third-party pages carry the citations you do get. Those third-party pages are your next outreach list. This is the same baseline-first method we use for Claude and Gemini, applied to the engine where citations are easiest to observe.
FAQ
Does Perplexity use Google or Bing results?
Perplexity primarily relies on its own crawler (PerplexityBot) and its own index, retrieving live pages at query time. That is why crawl access on your own site matters more for Perplexity than for engines that lean on a partner index.
How is ranking in Perplexity different from ranking in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT only searches the web for some queries and its citation patterns have swung hard, with Reddit moving from about 60% to 10% of responses in weeks per Semrush’s 230K-prompt study. Perplexity cites sources in essentially every answer and its top domains stayed consistent across the same period.
How long does it take to get cited by Perplexity?
Crawlable, answer-first pages can appear in citations quickly because retrieval is live, but consistent presence across your category’s queries takes sustained work on content and third-party sources. Be skeptical of anyone promising a fixed timeline.
Is Perplexity worth it if search volume for it is so low?
The low volume is for people googling how to optimize for Perplexity, and that is the opportunity: few competitors are working on it. Your buyers’ queries happen inside Perplexity itself, where the engine answers millions of questions with citations every day.
